Marae are now connected
The Marae Digital Connectivity Programme, commenced in 2019, enables marae to receive grant-funded broadband connections and associated hardware that will support whānau and hapū to undertake economic activity and enhance their digital capabilities.
The programme provides the fastest available broadband connection to marae across Aotearoa. The digital hardware installed allows for video conferencing for virtual hui and remote communications, and marae are provided with technical support they need in order to utilise these services.
Mana whenua and community groups have shared how broadband has benefited their communities and the impact it has on their everyday lives. These include holding community meetings and hui online, growing businesses and tourism operations, and providing opportunities for rangatahi in education and health.
WIRELESS INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS (WISPs) AND SATELLITE PROVIDERS
Regional WISPs and other satellite providers are responsible for installing broadband in marae.
NIFF is working with the following providers for this programme of work: Gisborne Net, Gravity, AoNet Broadband, Lightwire, Farmside, Uber, Inspire Net, Primo, Wifi Connect, Evolution Networks and Spark.
