IRG Funding: $42m
Total Project Spend: $116.5m

The Ferry Basin Project (partially funded by NIFF) creates six new ferry berths on the western side of Queens Wharf to deliver a world-class facility that is suitable for Auckland’s growing transport needs. It will improve accessibility, deliver greater operational flexibility, enhance operational safety within the ferry basin and will accommodate increased passenger numbers.
There were approximately 240 workers involved in the Te Ngau o Horotiu/Ferry Basin Redevelopment Stage 1 project – including contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, professional services, Auckland Council and Auckland Transport staff. Of these 240 workers, approximately 40 of them were working on sites outside of Auckland. The majority of workers outside Auckland were based in Ruakaka and Northport, who fabricated and painted the floating pontoons that were then floated from Northland down to the Ferry Basin site in Auckland.
At the peak of the project, there were workers across the following sites:
- Auckland Ferry Basin
- Ruakaka (pontoon fabrication)
- Northport (pontoon painting)
- Hobsonville (canopy fabrication)
- The DVJ offices and various consultancy offices supporting design queries, changes and other technical aspect
